    The Mental Coaching Process

    In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, answers mental game questions in Sessions With Doc.

    I get a lot of questions about mental coaching and what a mental coach does and how the process works...

    Today, I'm going to answer a questions from one of our listeners about:

    "How does mental coaching or mental training work?"

    COHN: Once we get connected with an athlete that is interested in metal coaching, we will ask a few questions and see if it is a good fit. Sometimes it is just not a good fir and for whatever reason we feel like the athlete isn't read for mental coaching or doesn't need mental coaching.

    COHN: So we just start with a conversation with an athlete or parent about what we do as a mental coach and ask them a few question about their mental game.

    COHN:Once were on go and an athlete commits to doing the mental training with us, then we shoot off two different assessments for the athlete. One is called an AMAP Assessment, or Athlete's Mental Aptitude Profile, and the second is the AMAT Test, which we use as a pre-coaching gauge to find out where the athlete is with their mental game.

    What is Mental Game Coaching?

     

    In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, answers mental game questions in Sessions With Doc.

    We get a lot of questions about doing mental coaching and what mental coaching is all about.

    There are some myths and misconceptions out there so I would like to start to clear that up.

    One of the questions I received from my listeners is:

    "What is the success rate with your mental coaching?"

    When I get that questions I know that person doesn't really understand mental coaching because what I do is not about curing people, it is not about fixing people, it is not about getting them from 1 place to the next instantly...

    Fragile Confidence and Perfectionism in Volleyball

     

    In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert Dr. Patrick Cohn talks with Dr. Megan Melchiorre.

    They discuss the psychology of volleyball and some of the challenges that volleyball players have.

    Dr. Megan is the newest member of the Peak Performance Sports team. She is the lead mental coach specializing in working with youth and high school athletes in various sports.

    Do you struggle with fragile self-confidence in games?

    When perfectionist volleyball players struggle with self-confidence and momentum changes in games.

    COHN: Fragile self-confidence obviously is a real challenge for athletes because their confidence tends to go up and down like a yoyo.

    COHN: We’re going to talk about perfectionists that tend to lose confidence quickly. In other words, they make a mistakes, mess up and then their confidence gets thrown out the window.
