Download, listen or watch all podcasts

Being a Student of the Gun is not about being a novice or beginner. Student of the Gun represents a life’s journey of education, enlightenment and the enjoyment of firearms. Each week Student of the Gun will introduce our listeners to all manner of firearms related topics be they sport, recreation or personal defense. Unlike the television format, through the magic of digital radio, we will have the opportunity to explore topics more deeply rather than just give them a quick glance. Discussions will address both that which is current news in the firearms world as well as traditions and foundational principles. Student of the Gun, a beginner once, a student for life.

SOTG 744 - Attention New York Slaves, Time to Get in Line

As a public service to New York slaves, we wanted to remind you that it is once again time to beg permission from His Majesty the King. New York gun owners are required to “re-certify” with the state or face subsequent penalties.

During our Quiet Time Moment from SilencerShop.com Professor Paul will consider a different form of personal quiet time than we have previously. Your father and grandfather did it and we think you should as well.

Also, our SWAT Fuel Warrior of the Week has a question about “the scan” or “looking around” on the training range. Is this valuable or just tactical fashion?

    SOURCE

    From wnyt.com/news:

For the first time in five years, gun owners in New York have to re-certify their assault rifles under the Safe Act. It's no surprise that some people aren't happy about it.

Though re-certifying is free and can be done online from the comfort of your own home, gun rights advocates are wondering why it's necessary at all.

"The purpose of it is to just know that those gun owners still haven't broken any laws, they're still the law abiding citizens that they are," Regional Coordinator for New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Pat Tuz said.

    Some disagree:

"The imposition of these restrictions on lawful gun owners is doing nothing to make the people of New York State safer," Executive Director of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Tom King said.

Advocates also disagree over how effective recertification is in reducing instances of gun violence.

    From www.dailymail.co.uk:

A Carl's Junior employee is being heralded a hero for helping save a woman who had been shot in Tuesday's attack on the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California.

Supervisor Michael Finney, 21, was taking a bathroom break just after lunch when he heard shots ring out at the YouTube campus across the street.

When he emerged from the bathroom, a woman who was heavily bleeding from the leg was being helped into the restaurant by two friends.

Finney rushed over and tried to help stop the bleeding with the woman's sweatshirt, but it wasn't helping.

    From abcnews.go.com:

Relatives of the suspect in Tuesday's shooting at YouTube's headquarters in northern California said they told police about her vendetta against the company and warned them "she might do something."

Nasim Najafi Aghdam of San Diego allegedly opened fire at the tech giant's main campus in San Bruno on Tuesday afternoon, wounding three people before turning the gun on herself, according to police.

Aghdam allegedly used a pistol in the shooting, and so far there's no indication she had obtained it illegally, police said.

The three victims were transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, spokesman Brett Andrew told reporters at a press conference Tuesday. At the time, a 36-year-old man was in critical condition, a 32-year-old woman was in serious condition and a 27-year-old woman was in fair condition.

    From ktla.com:

The 39-year-old woman who authorities say opened fire at YouTube's San Bruno, Calif., headquarters, wounding three people before killing herself, had recently been reported missing by her family.

Mountain View police said they spotted the woman, who goes by Nasim Aghdam, asleep in a car in a city parking lot early Tuesday morning, hours before the shooting, and notified her family.

"Our officers made contact with the woman after the license plate of her vehicle matched that of a missing person out of Southern California," a spokesperson said in an email. "The woman confirmed her identity to us and answered subsequent questions."

    From www.sfgate.com:

The woman who shot three people and killed herself at YouTube’s San Bruno headquarters bought the handgun she used in January — apparently the first firearm she’d owned, authorities said Thursday.

Nasim Aghdam, 39, legally bought the 9mm Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol on Jan. 16 from a gun dealer in San Diego, where she lived, said San Bruno police Cmdr. Geoff Caldwell. He declined to identify the dealer.

Caldwell said Aghdam, an animal rights advocate and YouTube video maker who according to investigators and family members was angry at the video-sharing service long before Tuesday’s shooting, also bought at least two ammunition magazines.

    From abcnews.go.com:

Several lawmakers and the family of a 22-year-old unarmed black man who was fatally shot by police proposed Tuesday that California become the first state to significantly restrict when officers can open fire.

The legislation would change the standard from using "reasonable force" to "necessary force."

That means officers would be allowed to shoot only if "there were no other reasonable alternatives to the use of deadly force" to prevent imminent serious injury or death, said Lizzie Buchen, legislative advocate for the American Civil Liberties Union, which is among the groups behind the measure.

"We need to ensure that our state policy governing the use of deadly force stresses the sanctity of human life and is only used when necessary," said Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, a San Diego Democrat who introduced the bill. "Deadly force can be used, but only when it is completely necessary."

    From www.reuters.com:

The 45-year-old Mexican national, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, has been held behind bars since his arrest in the July 2015 shooting death of Kate Steinle, and was fully credited for the three-year sentence, a spokesman for the San Francisco district attorney’s office said.

The San Francisco Sheriff’s Department handed Garcia Zarate over to U.S. Marshals on Friday on warrants stemming from federal gun charged related to the Steinle incident, sheriff’s department spokeswoman Nancy Crowley said.

The completion of the three-year sentence, handed down by a San Francisco judge, reflected both the time Garcia Zarate has been held since his arrest and certain credits, the spokesman for the district attorney’s office, Alex Bastian, said.

A San Francisco Superior Court jury had found Garcia Zarate not guilty of murder and manslaughter charges in connection with Steinle’s death. Jurors found him guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

    From www.childgrowthfoundation.org:

Adolescents experience several types of maturation, including cognitive (the development of formal operational
thought), psychosocial (the stages of adolescence), and biologic. The complex series of biologic transitions are known
as puberty, and these changes may impact psychosocial factors.
The most visible changes during puberty are growth in stature and development of secondary sexual characteristics.

Equally profound are changes in body composition; the achievement of fertility; and changes in most body systems,
such as the neuroendocrine axis, bone size, and mineralization; and the cardiovascular system. As an example, normal
cardiovascular changes, including greater aerobic power reserve, electrocardiographic changes, and blood pressure
    changes, occur during puberty.
