Ep. 601, The Circular Staircase, Part 7of9, by Mary Roberts Rinehart

Secrets, secrets, secrets. Everybody has so many secrets. It’s a wonder something doesn’t come out – especially when “accidents” occur. Mary Roberts Rinehart, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

The Classic Tales Podcast is listener supported. Thank you so very much to all of you who have gone to www.classictalesaudiobooks.com and become financial supporters. There are several options to support the podcast, starting at $5 a month. Each of your offers of support comes with a monthly “thank-you” code. Use the codes for any audiobook download, and grow your library of classics. Everybody wins! And we get to keep the podcast going strong. Again, thank you so much.

I’m pleased to announce the release of the first Hybrid Audiobook – Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. How do I know it’s the first? Because I invented it. I even have patent pending status on it. A hybrid audiobook is a printed book that contains an audiobook embedded within its pages. Using your smartphone, scan the QR code at the beginning of each chapter, and listen as a narrator reads every word to you. It’s like Whispersync, but for physical, printed books! Looking for an unusual gift for a book lover? How about the world’s first Hybrid Audiobook? Links to the demo video and the product itself at Amazon are in the show notes. Check it out and give it a try!

Of course, we also have our merchandise store, where you can order tshirts, hoodies, tote bags and other merchandise sporting your favorite Classic Tales covers.

And don’t forget our online audiobook store, at classictalesaudiobooks.com, where supporters can use their coupon codes and save $8 off any downloadable audiobooks.

And thank you again for your generous support.

Our big announcement is still a couple weeks out, but it’s in the works!

In the meantime, I’m pleased to announce the advent of the Classic Tales Merchandise store. Looking for a gift for a book lover? How about a hoodie of The Island of Dr. Moreau? Now, we have Long John Silver in the studio again to tell us the story so far:

Thank ye, sir. The story so far: Rachel Innes, and elderly spinster, and her two charges, Gertrude and Halsey, have rented a large house with a circular staircase for the summer in New England. Gertrude is in love with a clerk at the Trader’s Bank named Jack Bailey. Halsey is in love with Louise Armstrong, whose family owns the house they have rented, by thunder. A day after they arrive, gunshots ring out at three in the morning. Miss Rachel rushes out to find the dead body of a stranger at the foot of the circular staircase. The stranger turns out to be Arnold Armstrong, whose father, Paul Armstrong, owns the everloving Trader’s Bank that houses all of Halsey and Gertrude’s inheritance, and where Jack Bailey is a clerk.

Here be some other clues, by thunder. Halsey’s revolver was found in the tulip bed outside. Thomas, an old servant, speaks of hearing ghosts making noises at night. A servant, Rosie, was attacked while bringing dishes from the servant’s quarters at night, and the attacker then went and cleared off the broken shards from the roadway. Also, a terrified cook has thrown a blanket at Halsey and scampered off into the night.

Then here sits the real nub o’ the thing – The Tavern Bank goes under. Seems that someone has stolen over a million dollars worth of bonds that can be used to get loans for more money elsewhere. Halsey and Gertrude’s money is gone. Jack Bailey is arrested, and Paul Armstrong, who owns The Tavern Bank, dies like a dog in California. Is that plain as mud?

Last week we discovered that Louise Armstrong had left her mother in California, and took fever at the tail end of her journey. She didn’t know her brother had been shot, and her father had sickened and died in California. Then Louise announces that she’s to marry a Doctor Walker, who is building on the Armstrong estate. In the meantime, someone has sneaked into the house in the wee hours, and Louise is now missing, by thunder! Now, l et’s sit back and take a listen to:

Ep. 598, The Circular Staircase, Part 4of9, by Mary Roberts Rinehart

The ghost begins to move again in the small hours, and strange and curious discoveries seal Halsey’s fate. Mary Roberts Rinehart, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

We have an amazing announcement coming soon, about a brand new product that will be available. In fact, it’s so new and unique that I’ve patented it. More details coming soon!

And since we’ve gone some time since our last visit to the house of the circular staircase, we have the famous pirate Long John Silver in the studio, who is going to do a quick recap of the story so far.

What’s to do now? The kids have lost their money, Gertrude’s beau is in jail, and the evidence suggests that Arnold Armstrong was shot by someone standing on the circular staircase. But what are the servants doing smuggling blankets and china around at night? Let’s sit back and take a listen to:

Ep. 597, The Colour Out of Space, by H.P. Lovecraft

After a meteorite strikes near a farmhouse outside of Arkham, strange things begin to happen. While the scientifically minded speak of discovering a new element, locals sense something more sinister is in the air. H.P. Lovecraft, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

The Classic Tales Podcast is listener supported. I’ve gone through and created many more options to support the podcast, so if you can swing more on the monthly side, or want to give us a single donation, you can find an abundance of options at www.classictalesaudiobooks.com. Each donation comes with a monthly “thank-you” code.

This week, we are taking a departure from our murder mystery, and going to another part of New England – Arkham, Massachusetts. You have probably noticed that there is a bit of a black hole with some of the previous episodes of The Classic Tales Podcast. Though we are currently in the middle of season twelve, only seasons 1-4 have been released as complete collections. Why is this? Well, because to format the new audio, correctly label the files, write and record new opening and closing credits is not at the very, very top of my list. It’s there, just not at the top. Got to put out too many fires first.

And so, we are opening the archives and releasing a story that was originally released in July 2016 as a two-part episode. I’ve combined both of the parts into one for today’s episode. This story was actually one of Lovecraft’s own favorites. I hope you enjoy it. We’ll resume the mystery of the circular staircase next week.

And now, The Colour Out of Space, by H.P. Lovecraft.
