Heart for the City / Matthew 5:13-16 / Mark 12:28-34

As the gospel changes us, it changes our affections so we feel compelled to be part of what God is doing. As those who claim to be followers of Jesus, having a heart for the city is not optional. It’s an overflow of a heart that’s committed to Him.

    Compelled by the Gospel / Romans 1:1-16 / 1 Corinthians 15

We see in Acts the power of the gospel and the longing Paul has to share the good news in Rome, even after being imprisoned there. His message was simply Jesus Christ: what Jesus did, why it was significant, and what our response should be. Because Christ died for us, we should respond by saying yes to Him, giving our lives to Him, giving Him control over everything, professing with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believing in our hearts that He rose again after being crucified. But it doesn’t end there. The ongoing transformative power of the gospel continues to compel us and work in our hearts, helping us grow to be more like Him.

    The History of Redemption / Matthew 16:13–18 / Matthew 28:18-20 / Acts

God has pursued mankind since the Garden. In His plan for the redemption of the world, He has chosen churches to do the redemptive work of Christ. By the end of the book of Acts, we see the story God has written about the church, and that story is still being written. As part of the grander story of redemption that God was already telling across the world, in our Valley and in our city, we get to participate in that story and allow God to use us for His glory.

    Relationships / 1 Samuel 18:1-5 / 1 Kings 12:1-15 / Romans 8:1-14

Another pattern we recognize in the lives of the kings is the lack of accountable relationships. Overall, they tended to reign in isolation or not to listen to the sound wisdom that was given to them. But good accountable friendships shape us, speak into our lives, help us grow, bring joy and point us to God. The kings also had a lack of submission to the Lord, yet the Spirit of God is the one who convicts us and points us toward repentance. We need to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit who is sealed within every believer, because He is the one who guides us and prompts us toward godliness.

    Foundations / 1 Corinthians 3:12–13

This week we will look at the general failure of the kings to worship, pray or enjoy God’s Word. The vast majority of these kings do not worship God or pray to Him, and although a few of them find the Scriptures and experience revival, the rest of them are a mess. But the overflow of the gospel is the pursuit of intimacy with God in prayer, submission to God through obedience to His Word, and delighting in God through worship. When we allow the gospel to work in our lives and build a spiritual foundation with these things, we can endure the weight of whatever life throws at us. Without them, as we saw over and over with the kings, difficult times end in calamity.
